About 30 years ago I saw a North Carolina potter using a hinged stick to open a ball of clay on the wheel. Years later I thought of the device and wondered if it could be made to slide sideways too. I built one, and to my great satisfaction, found it to be a huge energy saver. The centered clay can be opened to a preset depth and then spread to the desired width with great speed, keeping the clay well centered, and the bottom very compressed.
Sized to easily fit Brent or other pottery wheels with 2" pipe legs, without any drilling.
